Professor Francis Alexander Shasha Torya Matambalya (Ph.D.) is a multi-skilled scholar with theoretical and practical competences in international Economic Relations (embracing trade economics, industrial development, and intellectual property), and the broad area of Business Management (with a strong focus on International Marketing). Prof. Matambalya is a well-known African Professor of International Trade and Marketing. He taught at the University of Dar es Salaam from 1987 to 2008 and Leipzig University (Germany) from 2015-2017. He has also been a visiting scholar at several institutions in different countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute (2008), University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA (2003), Centre for Development Research of Bonn University in Germany (1999 to 2001), Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE) of the University of Oxford (2000), Lancaster University (1998), and Kiel Institute of World Economics (1994).

Prof. Matambalya’s career experience include a 4-year stint (2008-2010, and 2017-2018) as a Senior Development Consultant based at the Headquarters of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in Vienna, Austria; Research Professor and Lead Expert on Africa Africa-European Union Relations, International Trade, and Regional Integration at the Nordic Africa Institute in Uppsala, Sweden (2010-2014); and Professor and Head of Research and Publications at the International Small Enterprise Promotion and training (SEPT) Program of Leipzig University’s Faculty of Economic Sciences, Faculty of Oriental Studies, and Institute for African studies (2015-2017).

In addition, he has provided and continues to provide advisory services to several governments, intergovernmental regional and international organisations, and non-governmental organisations. As an Economics Scholar, Prof. Matambalya’s professional work rests largely on International Economic Relations (here, with a strong focus on International Trade, International Economic Diplomacy, Industrial Development, and the Economics of Intellectual Property and Development).

As a management scholar, Prof. Matambalya’s professional work rests largely on International Marketing and particularly on its interface with the various fields of International Economics (i.e., International Trade, International Economic Diplomacy, Industrial Development, and the Economics of Intellectual Property and Development).

From his interdisciplinary research activities, he is the author and editor of several scholarly books. He is also the author of several scholarly papers in professional journals, as well as many policy papers and reports, chapters in edited volumes, research reports, discussion / working papers, and conference proceedings.

Prof. Matambalya advises many national, regional and international institutions on how they can promote inclusive, people-centred, and sustainable development, by leveraging International Trade, Industrial Development, and Intellectual Property.

Prof. Matambalya has been involved in many industrial development projects, most recently as Lead Consultant tasked to Draft the UNIDO Roadmap for the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III), and subsequently to transform the same into a Joint Roadmap for the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III). He was also honoured to give a word of introduction on the Summit Theme “A Conducive Environment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development, Increased Intra-Regional Trade and Job Creation” at the opening of the fourth SADC Industrial Week (SIW) on 5th August 2019. At the same event, Prof. Matambalya was honoured to be the Moderator of the Ministerial Roundtable on ´Business environment and predictability of policies on Industrial Development`.

Prof. Matambalya is the Editor of the refereed volume ‘African Industrial Development and European Union Co-operation: Prospects for a reengineered partnership’ (by Routledge 2015). He is a regular media (TV, Radio, newspaper) analyst of industrial and overall economic development in and outside Tanzania.
